Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) taking part in Thursday's “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration have expressed confidence in the party's political future with some declaring that "the street" now belongs to the NPP and its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking to the media during the protest, one demonstrator, who wore dreadlocks and positioned himself as an authority on the streets of Accra, dismissed suggestions that those participating were disgruntled party supporters.

"The street is for Bawumia now," he proclaimed.

"Bawumia has taken the seat now."

Rejecting claims that NPP supporters were demonstrating out of frustration, he stressed "they say we are hungry foot soldiers but that's not true”.

"Whatever you do, we are winning and moving forward."

Another protester said the public had become disillusioned with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

"The street is disappointed in the NDC," the protester said.

"The street is disappointed in President Mahama."

The nationwide demonstration was organized by the NPP under the theme “Democracy Under Attack” with the party alleging increasing intimidation of critics and threats to free expression under the current Mahama administration. 

The government has however rejected those claims.
