The National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has urged all Ghanaians to support and pray for the Black Stars as they commence their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

In a press statement issued on Monday, June 15, the Chief Imam extended his goodwill to the team ahead of their opening Group L match against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto.

Call to Prayer and National Unity

Following a recent visit from the Ghana Football Association, the Chief Imam directed Regional, District, and local Imams across the country to include the national team in their prayers.

Special supplications are being directed toward the opening match against Panama and the entirety of Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance.

The Chief Imam emphasized that the team represents the collective pride and identity of the nation.

“The Black Stars carry not only the aspirations of football supporters but also the collective hopes, pride, and identity of the Ghanaian people,” the Chief Imam noted. “Their participation on the global stage serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and patriotism, transcending political, ethnic, and religious differences.”

Team Preparation

He encouraged the public to unite behind the team as they play under Coach Carlos Queiroz.

The statement concluded with a prayer for the team's success: “May Almighty Allah bless the Black Stars with success and make their participation a source of pride, joy, and inspiration for Ghana and future generations. Go Black Stars! Go Ghana!”

The Black Stars are scheduled to depart Rhode Island for Toronto on Monday in preparation for Wednesday’s kickoff at 7:00 p.m. ET.
