The demolition of the Accra Turf Club at Borteyman has sparked protests from Ghana’s equestrian community, with jockeys, horse owners and other stakeholders calling for government intervention.

The historic facility was demolished on August 22, 2026, after individuals accompanied by armed security reportedly moved onto the site.

The development has affected a community that has relied on the turf club for horse racing and related activities for decades.

Jockeys, trainers, stable hands and feed suppliers are among those whose livelihoods are linked to the facility.

Hundreds of protesters, including jockeys in racing silks and horse owners, later gathered at Independence Square before marching through parts of Accra.

The protesters submitted petitions to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lands Commission.

The march ended at the Jubilee House, where the protesters called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.

“We have come not merely to protest, but to seek the intervention of the highest office of our motherland Ghana in order for justice to prevail,” club leaders told officials.

They are also demanding the enforcement of what they described as an established land-swap agreement between the state and the club.

The protesters said the demolition raises concerns about the management of public property and called for transparency in resolving the dispute.

They are seeking government intervention to address the demolition and the impact it has had on the equestrian community and its livelihoods.
