Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan believes Antoine Semenyo will play a key role for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the forward's recent performances at club level.

Semenyo enjoyed an impressive season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists for AFC Bournemouth before completing a move to Manchester City in January.

The Ghana international continued his form at City, registering 11 goals and three assists and helping the club win two domestic trophies.

Speaking at the Rolling Nations event in New York City, Gyan said Semenyo has become one of the most important players in the current Black Stars squad and will have a significant role to play at the World Cup.

“He’s the face of Ghana football right now because of his position and what he has done for himself. Everything is going to depend on Antoine Semenyo for this World Cup,” Gyan said.

The former Black Stars captain, who represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups, also noted that Semenyo will face increased expectations because of his status and performances in European football.

“There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo going to the World Cup. People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team,” he said.

“There will be a bit of pressure because of where he is playing now. When you’re playing for one of the best teams in the world and you come to the national team, there will be a lot of expectations.”

Semenyo is set to make his second World Cup appearance and has scored three goals in 34 appearances for Ghana.

The Black Stars are currently preparing for the tournament with friendly matches against Wales in Cardiff and Jamaica on June 10.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia.
