El-Shenawy handed 4-match ban for referee incident
Mohamed El Shenawy, goalkeeper for Al Ahly SC, has been suspended for four matches after an incident involving a referee during a league game against Ceramica Cleopatra FC.
The incident occurred after a 1-1 draw in the Egyptian Pro League, where El-Shenawy, who was on the bench, reacted following a late handball appeal that did not result in a penalty for Al Ahly.
In a statement, the league confirmed: "A four-match ban and fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling [use of the hand without violence]."
The 37-year-old, who was Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to be included in the national squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America.
Al Ahly, the defending champions, are currently third in the play-offs with 41 points after one match, trailing leaders Zamalek SC by five points.
El-Shenawy will miss matches until the final week of the play-offs, during which the top seven teams compete in the championship round.
