Ghana GFA to meet Friday to appoint new World Cup coach after Otto Addo’s exit
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will hold an Executive Council meeting on Friday, April 10, 2026, to decide on a replacement for Otto Addo, who was dismissed following a string of poor results ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Addo, a German-born coach of Ghanaian stock, had led Ghana to qualification and was expected to remain in charge.
However, four consecutive defeats in international friendlies prompted the GFA, in consultation with the Sports and Recreation Ministry, to make a change.
Friday’s high-level meeting is expected to focus on appointing a new head coach to lead the Black Stars at the World Cup, where Ghana will face Panama, Croatia, and England in Group L.
Several names have emerged as potential candidates.
Current Saudi Arabia coach Herve Renard, former Morocco manager Walid Regragui, and Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low are among those linked with the role. Former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah is also reportedly under consideration.
The GFA is seeking an experienced, high-profile coach capable of delivering at the World Cup while rebuilding the squad for the future.
Ghana’s recent form has raised concerns.
The team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has experienced successive group-stage exits in previous tournaments, and currently sits 74th in the FIFA rankings, one of the lowest positions among World Cup participants.
The Black Stars will kick off their World Cup campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, before matches against England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
Friday’s meeting is expected to accelerate the appointment process, with GFA President Kurt Okraku having pledged that a new coach will be confirmed within two weeks.
