The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed former Ghana international Godwin Attram as assistant coach of the Black Stars as part of a technical restructuring ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Attram replaces Desmond Ofei, who, according to the GFA, will focus exclusively on his role as head coach of Ghana’s U-23 side, the Black Meteors.

The appointment comes as Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz pushes for greater stability within the national team, stressing the need to build the team around a consistent core of players.

Addressing the press on Monday, September 21, the Portuguese coach said frequent changes to the squad make it difficult to develop the continuity and consistency required to compete for major titles.

“You can change the team at 7, 8, 10 players or 12 players every single game. Nobody can succeed and nobody can be champion and reach the finals,” he said.

“You have to find one way to build a team around the core of players that sustain the team,” Queiroz added.

Attram joins the technical bench with experience as both a player and coach.

The former Black Stars midfielder played for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven and Danish club Silkeborg IF. He has also served as head coach of Accra Great Olympics and worked within Ghana’s national youth team structures.

The GFA said his appointment is part of efforts to strengthen the technical team ahead of Ghana’s upcoming international engagements, including the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Queiroz, however, identified player injuries as a major obstacle to building a stable squad, revealing that some potential players were unavailable at the start of his current assessment of the team.

He said the situation has prompted him to consider a deeper investigation into the frequency of injuries among Ghanaian players, particularly certain types of injuries.

The coach maintained that player availability, commitment and accountability would be critical to building a Black Stars team capable of competing at the highest level.

Attram’s appointment comes days after Queiroz named a 21-man squad for Ghana’s upcoming AFCON qualifying matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Ghana will travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before hosting The Gambia in Accra on September 29.

The Black Stars will then play Morocco in an international friendly in Tangier on October 4, 2026.
