The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reached an agreement with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz for him to remain as head coach of the Black Stars.

The GFA said Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup, ended a few weeks ago.

Following discussions between the GFA, Queiroz and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the parties agreed on a new coaching mandate for the 73-year-old coach.

The new mandate will begin with the upcoming international window.

Queiroz took charge of the Black Stars in April after Otto Addo was dismissed in March. He was initially appointed on a four-month contract.

According to a report by GhanaSoccerNet, negotiations over a new contract had reached an advanced stage after outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his backroom staff were settled.

The payments related to their contracts for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign and were reportedly cleared by the GFA with support from the Ministry of Sports.

The settlement removed a major hurdle in negotiations and paved the way for Queiroz to continue in the role.

The GFA said it believes Queiroz’s “extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars” position him strongly to lead the team into its next chapter.

His continued stay will see him lead Ghana into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.

They will then host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.

Ghana is seeking a return to the continental tournament after missing the previous edition in Morocco.

The GFA said further details on Queiroz’s new mandate and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme will be announced in due course.

It said the Association and the coach will now focus on “building a successful new phase for Ghana on the international stage.”
