Ghana have been handed a bye into the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, after being named among 14 countries exempted from the opening round based on their points ranking.

The Black Meteors will join the campaign at the second-round stage alongside some of Africa's leading U23 sides, including Morocco, Mali, South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria. The other exempted countries are Guinea, Niger, Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Zambia and Senegal.

The exemption means Ghana skip the opening round entirely, giving them one fewer hurdle to clear en route to the tournament. The first round will involve the remaining participating countries, with winners advancing to face the 14 exempted nations in the second round.

Ghana's shorter route still requires them to negotiate the second round successfully to reach the tournament proper.

The U23 AFCON gives some of Africa's emerging talents a platform to gain international experience at continental level. The 2027 edition is provisionally scheduled for November, though CAF has yet to confirm final dates and the full qualifying calendar.

The Black Meteors will now await the outcome of the first round to learn their second-round opponents. With Morocco, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and other highly ranked sides also entering at that stage, the round could produce several high-profile encounters.
