Ghana to field 40-member contingent across 7 disciplines at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Ghana's team will compete in seven out of 10 disciplines

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has confirmed that Ghana will compete in seven out of the 10 sports disciplines at the upcoming Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The announcement was made by GOC President Richard Akpokavie during the committee's Annual General Meeting on Saturday.

Listing the specific sports Ghana will contest, Akpokavie stated, ''For this year's athletics, boxing, judo, para athletics, para powerlifting, para swimming, and weightlifting.''

The GOC also finalized the total number of representatives the country will send to Scotland for the event.

"The plan is to send 40 athletes, coaches, medical officers, safeguarding officers, and, of course, led by the Chef de Mission for this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow," Akpokavie added.

This delegation size marks a significant reduction compared to Ghana's contingent at the previous edition of the event. At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Ghana was represented by 100 athletes, comprising 60 men and 40 women.

The reduction in the team size was influenced in part by a October 2024 resolution by the Commonwealth Games Federation to downsize its overall sporting program from 19 sports to just 10.

Disciplines such as cricket, field hockey, rugby sevens, squash, and wrestling were cut as an emergency, cost-saving measure after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting duties due to rising expenses.
