African Games LOC Chairman shocked by 'unjustified' ₵35.8m police bill

Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the Accra 2023 African Games, has stated that the Ghana Police Service could not justify a GH₵35.8 million bill submitted for security services rendered during the continental tournament.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, Dr Ofosu Asare expressed his astonishment at the financial claim, explaining that the security arrangements had shifted unexpectedly.

"Initially they were just to assist in providing security and we were even feeding them," Dr Ofosu Asare testified.

"Then they later pulled out. Out of nowhere, they brought us this bill."

"So I wrote to them and asked them to justify it. And they could not justify it," he continued.

"I was shocked to the marrow with the kind of bill they brought and I said please break it down to provide justification to support what you are claiming."

According to the LOC Chairman, the security services were meant to cover a three-week period. The African Games officially commenced on March 8 and concluded on March 23, 2024.

However, Dr Ofosu Asare noted in his testimony that the police withdrew their services before the tournament came to an end.

Independent checks by JoySports indicate that the total bill submitted by the law enforcement agency actually exceeds GH₵37 million.

Despite the large claim, only GH₵2 million of the total amount has been validated, and payment for that portion is still outstanding.
