GTA launches Ghana Tourism Information System to digitize licensing and boost sector growth
The Ghana Tourism Authority has launched the Ghana Tourism Information System (GTIS), a new digital platform designed to make licensing, compliance, and regulatory processes faster, more transparent, and accessible to tourism operators nationwide.
Speaking at the official launch, GTA Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto said the platform marks a shift toward a smarter, more responsive tourism sector aligned with President John Mahama’s vision to “reset Ghana.”
“When I assumed office, it was clear that if we want to transform tourism into a major pillar of national development, we must first fix the foundation.
And that foundation begins with systems,” she said.
For years, many tourism businesses had to travel long distances just to process licenses, renewals, and verifications.
The manual process was slow and often frustrating.
GTIS changes that by giving operators direct online access to licensing and regulatory services.
The system is built to improve efficiency, accountability, and public confidence in the sector.
One key feature is the license verification function, which allows customers to confirm whether an operator is licensed before engaging their services.
“This is extremely important because we must protect customers, professionalize the sector, and ensure that visitors and citizens receive value for money,” Houadjeto said.
Houadjeto stressed that tourism is more than travel.
“Tourism is employment, tourism is culture, tourism is investment, tourism is international identity,” she said.
The goal is for tourism to contribute more significantly to Ghana’s GDP.
To achieve that, the Authority plans to roll out a customer service register module within GTIS soon.
The module will collect data to help GTA and the Ministry of Tourism better understand the industry, guide policy, inform investment decisions, and design evidence-based support programs for businesses.
The GTA CEO called on operators to actively participate in the new system, saying its success depends on collaboration.
“When operators participate actively, the industry becomes stronger, more visible, more organized, and more competitive,” she said.
She thanked the Ministry of Tourism, technical partners, and developers for their support in bringing the platform to life, and affirmed that the Authority is committed to the digital transformation of the sector.
“The future of tourism in Ghana is digital.
The future of tourism in Ghana is connected.
The future of tourism in Ghana begins now,” Houadjeto concluded.
