Award-winning filmmaker and actress Lydia Forson has raised concerns regarding the growing emphasis on red-carpet fashion at industry events, questioning whether these gatherings are maintaining their focus on artistic achievement.

In a recent social media post, Forson expressed her appreciation for fashion but argued that it should complement rather than overshadow the primary purpose of award ceremonies.

She noted that when she attends such events, her priority is the celebration of film, music, and the arts.

“The red carpet should complement the event, not become the entire event,” Forson stated.

She observed that contemporary conversations often center more on outfits than on the winners, performances, or industry progress.

From an artist’s perspective, Forson described the pressure to deliver "viral fashion moments" alongside the emotional weight of the awards themselves as "exhausting."

She suggested that the industry should create intentional, style-dedicated spaces—such as African fashion galas or Met Gala-inspired events—if the goal is to center on fashion.

Forson concluded by reminding organisers and the public that the art must remain the priority, noting that without the films, music, and performances, the red carpet itself would not exist.

The filmmaker's comments follow the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) 27th edition on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
