Nana Akua Addo defends TGMA fashion focus
Ghanaian fashion icon and actress Nana Akua Addo has defended the increasing focus on fashion at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), while cautioning the public not to use the event as the ultimate standard for judging celebrity style.
According to her, although the TGMA red carpet serves as an important platform for style expression, fashion extends far beyond a single awards scheme and should not be used to define an individual’s creativity or industry relevance.
Her remarks come amid ongoing public debates surrounding celebrity fashion statements and red carpet appearances following the conclusion of this year’s awards season.
The style influencer has herself been at the center of continental conversations regarding African fashion, creativity, and originality after making headlines at the recent 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) with a cathedral-inspired gown.
While her bold, theatrical appearance at the AMVCA generated widespread admiration across social media, it also sparked a controversy.
Paris-based fashion house ALmée Couture accused her of using design elements from a concept they had allegedly developed for her.
Responding to the allegations, Nana Akua Addo maintained that the original creative direction and inspiration behind the outfit belonged entirely to her.
She explained that she chose to work with a different designer to execute the piece after the initial collaboration did not materialise as expected.
Despite the intellectual property dispute, her elaborate AMVCA wardrobe continues to dominate entertainment and fashion discussions across the continent, drawing praise from fans and fashion commentators alike for her distinct approach to high-profile red carpet appearances.
