The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has stated that it had no role in organising or approving the Karnival Kingdom Festival held in Accra between April 22 and 28, 2026.

In a statement issued on May 7, Sector Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said the Ministry did not receive any request, proposal or application connected to the event and had no knowledge of how it was authorised.

The clarification follows growing backlash on social media over videos and images from the festival that many users described as offensive to Ghanaian cultural values.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference has also criticised the event, raising concerns over alleged public nudity during some activities.

In a statement signed by Conference President Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the bishops referenced Section 278 of the Criminal Offences Act and questioned why police officers provided security for participants accused of misconduct.

The Conference called for a full and independent investigation into the festival, with the outcome made public. It also urged authorities to review event approval procedures to include clear standards on public decency.

Additionally, the bishops demanded an inquiry into the police presence at the event and called for broader national discussions on cultural expression and acceptable conduct in public spaces.

They also praised John Ntim Fordjour for pushing for accountability.

According to the bishops, cultural exchange programmes must operate within Ghana’s laws and values, regardless of where they originate.

The Ministry meanwhile reaffirmed its commitment to promoting tourism and cultural activities that protect public decency and reflect Ghana’s national identity.
