Osu Castle: Fmr seat of government to be reimagined as robust tourist site – President Mahama
Government is committed to developing Osu Castle, Osu, Accra, into a robustly attractive tourist site, President John Dramani Mahama has said.
Today, Thursday, February 27, 2025, he delivered his very first State of the Nation Address (SONA), on the floor of Parliament, following his historic return to power.
He said, "We will develop the Osu Castle, the former seat of government, and the area around it as a tourist attraction. It will have a pedestrian precinct with arts and craft market, jewelry and gold markets. This approximate 22-acre land will become a destination for tourism."
The Osu Castle real estate sits on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, built by the Danes and Norwegians in the 1660s. Originally, it was used in gold and ivory trade but later became a major slave-trading centre.
US Presidents Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder are part of international dignitaries who have toured the Osu Castle.
Also, one year after Ghana became a republic, some renovations were made to the edifice, with rooms created, to accommodate the late English Monarch Queen Elizabeth II upon her visit in 1961.
In 1902, Fort Christiansborg, alias Osu Castle, became the seat of Ghana's government. The status was later moved to the Flagstaff House which was reconstructed in 2008, inaugurated, and named the Golden Jubilee House by President J.A. Kufour.
