More than 10 students have been arrested in connection with the violent clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The arrests follow a series of reprisal attacks between students of the two schools in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, which resulted in significant damage to property on both campuses.

Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, disclosed the arrests to Class News on Thursday, saying the number of suspects is expected to increase as investigations continue.

“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said.

According to the Police Commander, some students fled their respective schools when police officers arrived at the scene. He, however, warned that escaping from the campuses would not prevent the police from locating and arresting those involved.

The police are currently compiling the names of all students suspected to have participated in the violence.

DCOP Owusu-Bempah also revealed that investigations have uncovered allegations that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack students of the other school.

He said the police have obtained the identities of teachers allegedly connected to the incident and will arrest them if evidence establishes their involvement.

“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” he warned.

The Eastern Regional Police Commander assured the public that no person found to have participated in the disturbances would be spared, regardless of their position.

He further appealed to students to cooperate fully with investigators and urged all parties to allow the police to conduct their work without interference.

The violence left six students of Okuapeman SHS injured and requiring medical attention.

The school's Headmaster said four of the injured students had been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission as of Wednesday.

Several facilities were also damaged during the disturbances, although the precise circumstances that triggered the confrontation between the two schools remain unclear.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the clashes and identify all persons who took part in the violence.
