Gov't completes evacuation of 1,900 Ghanaians from South Africa — Ablakwa
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says government has completed the evacuation of about 1,900 Ghanaians from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks in the country.
In a Facebook post accompanied by photos, Ablakwa said he personally welcomed the final group of evacuees on their return.
"Today I warmly welcomed the final group of Ghanaians successfully evacuated from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks," he wrote.
He said the second phase of the evacuation covered 1,000 Ghanaians, bringing the total number evacuated to approximately 1,900.
"The Government of Ghana has therefore in total evacuated about 1,900 Ghanaians and provided them with reintegration financial support, transportation allowance, medical care, psychosocial support, free health insurance registration and ongoing employment assistance," he said.
Ablakwa framed the evacuation as a collective national effort and reaffirmed government's commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad.
"We achieved this together as Ghanaians. Our message is clear: we value the lives of Ghanaians everywhere in the world, and no Ghanaian will be abandoned in harm's way," he said.
He thanked President John Dramani Mahama and local partners involved in the operation.
"I thank President Mahama for his inspirational leadership and all our local partners for their commitment to this worthy humanitarian mission," he said.
Ablakwa also acknowledged the four Ghanaians who died during the period, extending condolences to their families.
"We continue to pray with the families of the four Ghanaians who died during this period. May God grant them divine succour," he said.
He said the Foreign Ministry would provide a full account of the evacuation exercise in the coming week.
"Next week the Foreign Ministry shall present a comprehensive report and account fully and transparently to the great people of Ghana," he said.
