The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a strict ban on dumping waste at roundabouts and road medians, effective Monday, as part of efforts to improve sanitation in the city.

Under the new policy, residents who report individuals illegally dumping refuse will receive 50% of the court-imposed fine once the offender is convicted.

Mayor of Kumasi Ofori Agyemang Boadi said at a press briefing that dumping waste in public spaces is a criminal offence that will no longer be tolerated. The ban applies to all major roundabouts, including Otumfuo, Children’s Hospital, and MTN roundabouts, as well as the medians of all dual carriageways.

“The Ashanti Regional Minister has directed authorities to work closely with prosecutors to ensure that anyone caught dumping outside designated dustbins is apprehended and prosecuted,” he said.

To support the initiative, the KMA plans to install 30 to 40 new 1,000-litre dustbins across the Central Business District (CBD).

In addition, a dedicated compactor vehicle will be stationed in the CBD for continuous waste collection, reinforcing the city’s zero-tolerance approach.

Mayor Boadi also appealed to traders to take responsibility for their surroundings, urging them to monitor dustbin capacity and notify city guards promptly when bins are full to prevent overflow onto streets.
