C/R: Kasoa Traders fight eviction over market redevelopment plan
The Kasoa Petty Traders Association has petitioned the Minister for Trade and Agribusiness, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, to intervene in a dispute over the planned eviction of traders from the Kasoa Old Market Centre.
The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly plans to demolish temporary structures to make way for new market stores under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement, but traders are resisting, citing unaffordable costs and fears of displacement.
"We are against the development of permanent stores on this unsuitable land," the traders said in a statement.
The Ghana Highway Authority owns the land and only allows temporary structures, citing future road expansion plans.
Traders claim the redevelopment project, which would construct only 120 new stores for over 800 traders, would lead to massive job losses and benefit only a few influential individuals.
They are calling for transparent consultation and affordable alternatives.
