CLOGSAG maintains strike, cites lack of progress in government negotiations

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has reaffirmed that its nationwide strike remains in force, pointing to stalled negotiations with the government over concerns raised by its members. The Association says recent talks with state officials have yielded no meaningful progress.

According to CLOGSAG, government representatives had earlier pledged to provide a formal document detailing a timeline for settling the issues at the centre of the dispute, but the union says that commitment has yet to be honoured.

Addressing journalists after a meeting of the Association’s national leadership, Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo indicated that members had unanimously agreed to continue the industrial action until tangible steps are taken to resolve their demands

CLOGSAG has also taken issue with a recent decision by the National Labour Commission (NLC), describing the ruling as one made in bad faith because it was delivered without their participation. Leaders of the Association maintain they were never officially informed about the hearing that resulted in the decision.

“After deliberations it was agreed that the strike action should continue unabated,” Mr Bampoe Addo said.

“We didn’t receive any letter from the Labour Commission, and even if you go into a meeting and a party is not there, you have to adjourn. So, what the Commission did in itself is illegal,” he said.

In a related development, several regional executives of CLOGSAG have reiterated their support for the strike, stressing that the action will only be suspended when government shows a clear and credible commitment to resolving the union’s grievances.
