Debris clearance ongoing at Accra Newtown collapse site as NADMO concludes rescue phase
Debris removal is currently underway at the site of the collapsed building in Accra Newtown, with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) working together with other state agencies to clear the area.
The Director-General of NADMO, Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, said operations have moved beyond search and rescue to focus on restoring the site for normal community use.
“We have moved from emergency response aimed at saving lives and property to the next phase, which involves clearing the site to allow community activities to resume. This is a critical stage, and we must ensure that no one interferes with the process in a way that could endanger others,” he stated.
Dr Kuyon confirmed that all individuals who had been trapped beneath the rubble have been successfully retrieved.
The building collapsed on Sunday, March 29, 2026, near the Newtown Experimental D/A School in Accra, at a time when worshippers were present on the premises.
The incident claimed three lives and left about 20 others injured, drawing renewed attention to concerns over building safety standards in parts of the capital.
Authorities continue to manage the site as clearance efforts progress.
