EPA praised for Styrofoam ban as Ghana joins regional push against plastic pollution

Water and sanitation advocate and CEO of Drink Safe Water Ghana Limited, Mr. Krobea Asante, has commended the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for its commitment to ban the production, importation, and distribution of Styrofoam in Ghana.

Speaking on Accra FM’s news with Kofi Asumang, Mr. Asante described the move as long overdue, saying it is a proactive step toward addressing the country’s sanitation challenges.

“Ghana is long overdue in implementing such a proactive measure to curb the unsavoury sanitation state in the country,” he said.

He noted that Ghana’s decision aligns with actions already taken across Africa, where several countries have banned single-use plastics and Styrofoam to protect public health and the environment.

“Single-use plastics and Styrofoams are already banned in many African countries including Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Rwanda’s capital Kigali is widely celebrated as one of the cleanest cities in Africa because of it,” he added.

Mr. Asante warned that Styrofoam and plastics pose serious health and environmental risks, serving as carriers of disease and contributing to flooding in major parts of the country by clogging drains and waterways.

His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement on June 5, 2025, during World Environment Day celebrations, that the government intends to ban Styrofoam packaging nationwide. The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to making Ghana clean, describing Styrofoam as “one of the most pernicious polluters” and outlining plans to promote paper and aluminium foil as alternatives.

The EPA has since confirmed it is working on the regulatory framework to enforce the ban.
