Fordjour: Speaker Bagbin’s surprise over anti-LGBTQ+ bill passage supports Minority’s claims
John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and a co-sponsor of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, says comments by Alban Bagbin expressing surprise over the bill’s passage support concerns previously raised by the Minority.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight on June 1, Fordjour said the Speaker’s decision to convene a meeting to review the process confirms the Minority’s position that there were issues with both the procedure and the final form of the legislation.
He argued that amendments made during consideration of the bill significantly altered its content and made it materially different from the version originally presented. According to him, the changes weakened the bill and affected its intended purpose.
Fordjour also alleged that the passage of the bill lacked transparency, claiming some amendments were introduced without adequate scrutiny and that concerns raised by the Minority and the bill’s sponsors were ignored during proceedings.
He said the Minority will participate in the meeting called by the Speaker and present its position as discussions continue on the way forward.
