GFL calls for practical alternatives ahead of styrofoam ban
Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour(GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged government to provide practical and affordable alternatives as Ghana prepares to ban styrofoam takeaway packs and related products.
According to Mr. Koomson, although efforts to protect the environment are necessary and commendable, authorities must ensure that the transition does not create hardships for ordinary Ghanaians and small businesses that depend heavily on such packaging materials.
His comments follow the announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency that styrofoam products, including takeaway packs, disposable cups, and other polystyrene foam materials, will be banned nationwide effective January 1, 2027.
The proposed ban forms part of broader national efforts to reduce plastic pollution, improve sanitation, and promote environmental sustainability across the country.
The policy direction stems from a declaration made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration, where he reaffirmed government’s commitment to tackling plastic waste and protecting the environment.
In a statement issued on May 25, the EPA explained that the directive seeks to safeguard public health, reduce environmental pollution, and support Ghana’s sustainable development agenda.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, May 30, Mr. Koomson questioned what alternatives would be made available to consumers, food vendors, and businesses once the ban takes effect.
He argued that previous attempts to phase out certain packaging materials had not fully resolved environmental challenges, warning that banning products without introducing viable substitutes could create new economic and social difficulties.
Mr. Koomson therefore called on policymakers to engage key stakeholders, including traders, manufacturers, food vendors, and consumers, to ensure a smooth and effective transition to environmentally friendly packaging options.
He also commended Nana Ama Browne Klutse for her efforts and commitment toward addressing environmental issues in Ghana.
While supporting initiatives aimed at protecting the environment, the GFL Secretary-General stressed the importance of balancing environmental policies with the practical realities facing citizens and businesses across the country.
