The Ghana Education Service (GES) has rejected social media reports alleging that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme has been scrapped and parents are being asked to pay GH¢1,500 for items such as chop boxes and trunks.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, the Service described the reports as false and urged the public to ignore them.

The clarification follows the circulation of a purported directive claiming that the Director-General of the GES had ordered parents and guardians to make the payment ahead of the admission of students into senior high schools.

GES said no such directive has been issued and maintained that the Free SHS policy remains in force.

It further explained that the Director-General does not have the mandate to unilaterally terminate a national government policy such as Free SHS.

Management also cautioned parents, guardians and prospective students against making payments based on the social media publication.

The Service urged the public to verify information through official GES communication channels before acting on claims relating to school admissions, fees or supplies.

The warning comes as schools and families prepare for the next phase of the senior high school admission process.
