Fire incident at Kajetia

The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation into a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Kejetia Market in the Ashanti Region to determine its cause.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, when a blaze broke out in a shop on the first floor of the market.

According to fire officials, the shop was dealing in matches, a factor believed to have contributed to the intensity of the fire.

Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to contain the flames before they could spread to other parts of the busy commercial hub.

Despite the quick response, one shop was affected, with goods worth hundreds of Ghana cedis destroyed.

No casualties were recorded.

The latest incident marks the fifth fire outbreak at the Kejetia Market since the beginning of 2026, raising concerns among traders and authorities about recurring fire risks at the facility.

The Officer in charge of the Kejetia Market Fire Post, DOIII Ebenezer Opoku, indicated that while the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

A relative of the affected shop owner, Okyere Boateng, recounted how the fire started and the extent of the damage, while appealing to the public for support.

Meanwhile, President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Kwasi Prempeh, commended the prompt response of the fire service and urged traders to remain vigilant and adhere to safety measures to help prevent future incidents.
