March and March demonstration in South Africa

The Ghana High Commission Pretoria has issued an advisory urging Ghanaians in South Africa to take precautions amid an ongoing protest in the Johannesburg CBD.

In a statement dated Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the High Commission said the protest, organised by a group identified as the “March and March over unemployment and undocumented foreign nationals,” has already caused major traffic disruptions and interruptions to business activities in the area.

The mission warned of a heightened risk of tension, particularly towards foreign nationals, and advised Ghanaians to exercise caution throughout the day. It urged residents to avoid the Johannesburg CBD unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Those living in Johannesburg have been advised to remain indoors or in secure locations and to limit unnecessary movement.

The statement also cautioned members of the Ghanaian community not to engage with protesters under any circumstances, even if approached or provoked, and to prioritise personal safety at all times. It further encouraged individuals to carry valid identification and relevant documentation.

The High Commission urged the community to stay in close communication and check on vulnerable persons. Parents and guardians were also advised to ensure children remain in safe environments and avoid affected areas.

The mission called on the public to share only verified information and to remain calm and alert, stressing that the safety and well-being of Ghanaians remain the top priority.
