GA/R: Demolition along Michel Camp–Ashaiman road leaves traders counting heavy losses

A wave of destruction has swept through sections of the Michele Camp–Ashaiman Roundabout stretch in the Greater Accra Region as demolition works continue to make way for the expansion of the road from Akosombo to the Tema Roundabout.

The exercise, which began last week, has seen several shops and structures situated close to the road side pulled down, leaving many business owners devastated over the sudden loss of their livelihoods.

Heavy duty excavators, backed by military personnel to maintain order and prevent confrontations, were deployed to various points along the stretch, including Community 22 Junction, where demolition works intensified yesterday, Sunday April 26, 2026.

At Community 22 Junction, a pharmacy building was among structures reduced to rubble.

The pharmacist who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed shock over the development, insisting the building was not originally marked for demolition.

“They earlier came to demarcate an area and so we knew our building will not be affected but today we were there when they came that they had to break the building.

We only salvaged a few things but the MCA School upstairs had everything destroyed,” the pharmacist said.

The demolition also affected a machine school operating within the same building.

Owner, Mr. Joseph Afedi, said the destruction has left him in deep distress, especially considering the value of equipment lost and the financial burden now hanging over him.

“My shop initially was supposed not to be destroyed.

They earlier came to mark the frontage that I should remove it and I did only for them to come today to destroy everything here.

The number of people’s machines in there is my worry now because they are worth millions of cedis.

And I also took a loan to sustain the business. How am I going to pay and how would I take care of my children and how will the students I had learning from me?” he lamented.

The demolition exercise forms part of a major infrastructure expansion project aimed at improving traffic flow and road connectivity along the busy corridor linking Akosombo to Tema Roundabout.

Reports indicate that traders and property owners along the affected stretch were given ample notice ahead of the exercise, with some said to have received compensation to relocate.

However, not all affected persons appear satisfied, as several of them claim the demolition extended beyond initially marked boundaries.
