Government declares May 27 public holiday for Eid-Ul-Adha celebration
The Ministry of the Interior has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of Eid-Ul-Adha.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 15, 2026, the ministry said the day should be observed nationwide as a public holiday.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important celebrations in Islam.
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before God provided a ram as a substitute.
Muslims around the world mark the occasion with prayers, charitable acts, and the sacrifice of animals such as sheep, goats, or cows, with portions of the meat shared among family, friends, and the less privileged.
The celebration also coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
