Government moves to safeguard jobs as Damang mine lease nears expiry
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced that the Damang Mining Lease, held by Abosso Goldfields Limited - a subsidiary of Goldfields Limited - is set to expire on April 18, 2026, following a one-year extension.
In a statement, the ministry emphasised that the Damang Mine remains a key national asset, contributing significantly to Ghana’s gold production, export earnings, and employment.
Therefore, government is taking proactive steps to ensure continuity after the lease expires, including safeguarding jobs, maintaining service contracts, and reassuring stakeholders.
“These measures are part of our efforts to secure a credible investor and operator through a competitive bidding process,” the ministry said.
“Our goal is to ensure the mine’s continued contribution to national development while advancing long-term Ghanaian-centered ownership and investment.”
The ministry highlighted that the government remains committed to ensuring that the Damang Mine continues to deliver lasting value for host communities and the nation at large.
Transparency and responsible stewardship will guide the process, officials said.
Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah reaffirmed the government’s vision for a sustainable, Ghanaian-driven growth in the mining sector, while preserving the country’s reputation as a leading destination for responsible foreign investment.
“The Damang Mine is more than a mining site; it is a national asset, and we are committed to ushering in a new chapter that strengthens Ghana’s mining sector for the benefit of all,” the ministry statement concluded.
