Mourners gathered at the Independence (Black Star) Square in Accra on Friday for the second day of the final funeral rites of the late Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

Dressed in red and black traditional mourning attire, they sang, danced and cheered as they celebrated the life of the Kristo Asafo founder.

"The funeral has taken place, live and coloured," the mourners chanted, echoing remarks previously made by former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The funeral proceeded despite opposition from Adwoa Safo's brother, Nana Kwadwo Akofena Safo, who had said the burial arrangements did not have the approval of the Safo family or the Kristo Asafo Mission and therefore would not take place.

Following his announcement, a High Court issued an injunction restraining the funeral. However, the ceremonies commenced on Thursday, July 30, as scheduled.

During the gathering at the Independence Square, some mourners also jeered at Akofena Safo, noting he had been defeated.

While the venue was nowhere near full, the defiant spirit of the mourners underscored their unwavering support for the Kristo Asafo founder and his daughter Adwoa Safo.

High-profile guests expected at the event, according to Adwoa Safo, include New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who, Adwoa Safo said, approved July 30 as the start date for the funeral rites.
