Journalists’ coalition launches nationwide campaign against galamsey

A coalition of journalists under the banner of Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG) has officially launched a nationwide campaign to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The launch event took place today, March 17, 2026, at the Mikaddo Conference Centre in, bringing together journalists, environmental activists, and key stakeholders committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Held under the theme “Galamsey Ends Here – The Pen is Mightier Than the Changfan,” the initiative underscores the critical role of responsible journalism and public advocacy in addressing the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

As part of the launch, PAJAG unveiled its national structure and regional network, outlining a coordinated approach to tackling galamsey across the country.

The organisation also presented its action plan, which focuses on sustained media advocacy, public education, and stakeholder collaboration.

The event featured a keynote address and solidarity messages from various stakeholders, all emphasising the urgency of collective action in the fight against illegal mining.

A networking reception followed, allowing participants to strengthen partnerships and share ideas.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of PAJAG, Nana Otu Darko, called on stakeholders and the general public to support the initiative.

He stressed that a united national effort is essential to addressing the growing threat posed by galamsey and to safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Also, the Director of Communications at Ghana's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mawusi Ama Mawuenyefia, urges the media to use their voices to champion the fight against illegal mining.

However, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, graced the occasion as the special guest. commending the media for this bold and timely initiative, describing it as a significant step towards protecting Ghana’s river bodies and forest reserves from illegal mining activities.
