President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a high-level United Nations special session on reparatory justice, as part of a historic visit to the United States.

The President will depart Accra on Monday for engagements in New York and Pennsylvania, focusing on reparatory justice and the commemoration of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

At the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, President Mahama will convene and deliver the keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice.

The event, themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” will bring together world leaders and dignitaries to deliberate on addressing historical injustices.

On Wednesday, the president will address the United Nations General Assembly as part of activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

During his address, President Mahama is expected to present Ghana’s position—recently adopted by the African Union—on a landmark resolution seeking to declare the trafficking of enslaved Africans and their racialised chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.

The visit will begin with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument, where the President will pay tribute to the memory of enslaved Africans.

As part of his itinerary, President Mahama will also visit Lincoln University in Pennsylvania to deliver a keynote address. He is further scheduled to engage with the Ghanaian community at Temple University.

The visit underscores Ghana’s continued leadership in global conversations on reparatory justice and historical accountability.
