Middle East: Mahama urges global leaders to choose dialogue over war during Eid-ul-Fitr
President John Dramani Mahama has used the occasion of Eid al-Fitr to call for peace in the Middle East, urging world leaders to prioritise dialogue in resolving the ongoing conflict.
Addressing worshippers at Independence Square on Friday, March 20, the President voiced deep concern over the rising violence and its toll on civilians, particularly women and children.
“As we celebrate today, we cannot ignore the pain and suffering that is going on in other parts of the world… innocent lives, including women and children, are being lost. Families have been displaced, and communities have been shattered,” he said.
President Mahama made a direct appeal to key figures involved in the conflict, including Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Mojtaba Khamenei, urging them to demonstrate leadership in ending the crisis.
"May Allah touch the hearts of the leaders, President Trump, Netanyahu, Mojtaba Khamenei, so that this war will come to an end," he said.
He further called on Muslims and Ghanaians to use the Eid celebrations as a moment of reflection and prayer for those affected by the conflict.
“Let us pray for comfort for bereaved families, healing for the injured, and relief for those in distress. Above all, let us pray for wisdom for the leaders of the countries involved to choose dialogue over war,” he urged.
Referencing Islamic teachings, the President stressed the sanctity of human life and the need for compassion in times of conflict.
“The Holy Quran teaches us that saving one life is as if saving all of humanity. We must never lose sight of our shared humanity,” he noted.
Reaffirming Ghana’s foreign policy stance, President Mahama said the country remains committed to peace, justice, and respect for international law, and will continue to advocate for diplomatic solutions to conflicts worldwide.
