Middle East crisis: Jinapor urges emergency Cabinet meeting over rising fuel prices
Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency in the Savannah Region, has urged the government to convene an emergency Cabinet meeting to address the recent surge in petrol prices and its impact on Ghanaians.
In a strongly worded appeal, Jinapor stated that moments of crisis demand decisive leadership.
He pointed to former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s response during the 2008 global financial crisis and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic as examples of proactive governance.
According to him, the current situation requires urgent action to ease the burden on citizens.
He referenced measures taken by countries such as the United Kingdom, where support systems have been introduced to help residents cope with rising energy costs.
Jinapor also reminded the government of its earlier proposals, including the use of stabilisation and sovereign funds, as well as the removal of certain fuel taxes. He stressed that these ideas must now be implemented rather than discussed.
The former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources emphasised that the welfare of Ghanaians should remain the government’s top priority, calling for immediate steps to cushion citizens against the effects of rising fuel prices.
