The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has commenced a nationwide training programme aimed at improving the road safety awareness and professional capacity of its drivers.

The initiative officially began on Friday, April 3, 2026, with the first batch of head office drivers undergoing a two-day training session in Accra.

The programme is being supervised by the Human Resources Directorate’s Training and Development Unit, led by Deputy Director Mr. Dickson Nuku Dansu.

According to Mr. Dansu, the training forms part of efforts by NHIA’s Executive Management to enhance drivers’ emotional intelligence, road safety practices, and overall operational efficiency.

He encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions and take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen their skills.

The programme, which will be implemented in phases across the country, is designed to equip drivers with essential defensive driving techniques, risk awareness, and updated knowledge to support effective service delivery.

Addressing participants at the launch, the Director in charge of Administration, Mr. Raymond Avinu, emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that drivers play a critical role in the Authority’s daily operations.

He stressed that their professionalism, safety consciousness, and efficiency directly impact NHIA’s ability to deliver on its mandate.

Mr. Avinu further disclosed that the Chief Executive Officer of NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, had expressed satisfaction with the organization of the training, particularly after a long period without targeted capacity-building programmes for drivers.

The training is being facilitated by CBM Consult Ltd, led by Theophilus Otchere Appah, and covers key areas such as accident prevention, adherence to road safety regulations, and effective communication.

Participants also engaged in an open forum to share experiences and discuss strategies for managing stress in the workplace.

As part of the programme, Asterisk Insurance Brokers provided guidance on essential insurance policies and coverage, helping drivers better understand their responsibilities and benefits.

Participants expressed appreciation to NHIA management for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to their professional development.

With the nationwide rollout underway, the NHIA says the programme is expected to improve driver competence, promote safer road practices, and enhance service delivery across the country.
