An intelligence-led operation by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has led to the arrest of 19 suspects during a targeted anti-crime exercise in Kumasi.

The operation, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo, formed part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on criminal activities within the metropolis, including robbery, drug peddling, rape, and the illegal possession of firearms.

A total of 111 personnel were deployed for the exercise, supported by 10 service vehicles, including an armoured carrier and a Black Maria for transporting suspects.

The team conducted extensive patrols across key parts of the city, including areas around the Manhyia Palace enclave, with a focus on identified crime hotspots.

Acting on intelligence, officers moved into areas known as Alaba and Thinker, which authorities describe as centres for drug-related activities. Systematic searches were carried out on individuals and shop operators in the area.

During the operation, a shop operator identified as Madam Ola Ruth was arrested after a search of her premises revealed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Officers later apprehended 18 additional suspects in the same vicinity, bringing the total number of arrests to 19.

Exhibits retrieved included substances suspected to be heroin or cocaine, dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, opioids, and other items associated with drug use.

All suspects have been transferred to the Suntreso Police District Headquarters, where they remain in custody pending further investigations and possible prosecution.

The seized items have also been handed over for forensic analysis.

Police say the operation was conducted professionally and in line with established protocols, underscoring the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in tackling crime.
