At least 14 names with apparently impossible personal details have emerged in a JoyNews investigation into discrepancies in data used for what has become a controversial evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.

The investigation concerns the evacuation budget managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with questions being raised about the accuracy of official records.

According to the ministry’s data, some of the listed evacuees have dates of birth that are impossible.

One of the names, Precious Sekyiwaa, is recorded as having been born on October 28, 2034.

Another, James Akoto Baffour, is listed as having been born on December 26, 2036.

In another case, a person identified as David Botwey is recorded as having been born on the 24th month, on the fourth day, in 1989.

Furthermore, the investigation reveals an evacuee who was born on 31st February, 1990.

The discrepancies have raised questions about whether the entries are simply errors in data input or could be linked to a wider fraudulent scheme.

The investigation comes amid scrutiny of the cost of the evacuation, with GH¢49.7 million reportedly spent on bringing Ghanaians home from South Africa.

The discrepancies in the official records have therefore raised further questions about the accuracy of the data used in managing the evacuation expenditure.
