Youth in Shama-Nyankrom in the Western Region on Thursday staged a demonstration over the poor condition of roads in the area, blocking the main road and disrupting transport activities.

The protesters burnt car tyres and blocked the route used by heavy-duty trucks transporting clay to Twyford Ceramics and Marco Polo Tiles.

The action also affected the movement of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates and teachers for several hours despite the presence of police officers at the scene.

Leader of the Nyankrom Concerned Youth, Israel Kwesi Eshun, told reporter Simon Ahensah that the protest followed government’s failure to meet a one-month ultimatum issued to return contractors to site to repair the road.

According to him, the road has deteriorated significantly due to the activities of heavy-duty trucks linked to the tile manufacturing companies.

He warned that the protest would continue daily until contractors resume work on the road.

An administrator of Unique Star Education Complex at Nyankrom, Blessing Mensah, also said the demonstration disrupted the movement of BECE candidates and affected normal academic activities in the area.
