Tragedy on Volta Lake: 7 dead, 2 missing after boat capsizes
At least seven people have died and two others are missing after a boat capsized on Volta Lake in East Gonja District on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The vessel, carrying 14 passengers, overturned around 5:30 pm between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji–Congo route, reportedly due to adverse weather conditions.
Among the victims were two women and five children. Five men were rescued, while rescue teams have so far recovered seven bodies. One woman and one child remain unaccounted for.
Authorities confirmed that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, highlighting serious safety concerns.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing as local emergency services work to locate the remaining victims and prevent further loss of life.
