GA/R: Odawna residents fear flooding amid heavy rainfall warning, call for urgent drain desilting
Residents of Odawna in the Korle Klottey Constituency of the Greater Accra Region have expressed growing anxiety over potential flooding following warnings of heavy rains by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.
The agency has forecast intense rainfall in the coming days and is advising residents in flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas as a precautionary measure.
In Odawna, where flooding has become a recurring challenge, residents say the situation is likely to worsen due to the heavily silted Odaw storm drain, which they describe as a persistent hazard during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to them, the choked drain has over the years contributed significantly to flooding in the area, leading to destruction of property and disruption of livelihoods whenever it rains.
Residents are therefore calling on authorities to urgently dredge and desilt the drain to prevent a potential disaster as the rains approach.
The concerns come as communities across Accra brace for the anticipated downpours, with many urging swift intervention to mitigate the impact of flooding.
In a related development, journalist Veronica Ama Dei reports on the level of preparedness among residents of Odawna as they await the expected rains.
