Tomato supply crisis should take priority over appointment of Defence Minister — Koomson

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the government to prioritise addressing the country’s tomato supply challenges over the appointment of a Defence Minister.

According to him, while appointing a Defence Minister remains important, it is not an urgent matter, as existing structures within the security sector continue to function effectively.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’ on Saturday, April 4, Mr. Koomson stressed that the current difficulties surrounding tomato supply and pricing pose a more immediate concern for many Ghanaian households.

He described Ghana’s continued reliance on tomato imports from neighbouring countries, particularly Burkina Faso, as troubling and unacceptable for a country endowed with vast arable land.

Mr. Koomson noted that the situation reflects deeper structural challenges within the agricultural sector, adding that Ghana has the capacity to produce sufficient tomatoes locally if the right investments and policies are implemented.

He called for urgent government intervention to stabilise supply in the short term, while also advocating long-term strategies to boost local production, support farmers, and enhance agricultural productivity.

The GFL Secretary-General further warned that continued dependence on imports for basic food items could undermine food security and expose the country to external shocks.

He therefore urged authorities to prioritise agriculture-focused policies aimed at strengthening local production and ensuring price stability for essential commodities.
