The Deputy Director for the West and Central Africa Bureau of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Andrew Wyllie, has paid a courtesy call on Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka,  commending the country’s long-standing commitment to international refugee protection standards.

Mr. Wyllie praised Ghana for its consistent record in receiving and managing refugees, particularly during periods of regional crises.

He noted that the country’s asylum system aligns closely with UNHCR guidelines and reaffirmed the organisation’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Ghana.

He also stressed the need for greater integration of refugees into national systems, including access to education, employment opportunities, skills training, and income-generating programmes.

He specifically highlighted the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainable Programme as a model initiative that promotes self-reliance and reduces dependency among refugees and host communities.

According to him, such programmes are key to fostering resilience and dignified livelihoods.

In response, Ghanaian authorities reaffirmed the country’s Pan-Africanist values and commitment to solidarity and shared humanity in addressing refugee issues.

Officials noted that while Ghana’s resources are limited, the country remains committed to supporting asylum seekers and providing necessary humanitarian assistance.

They also acknowledged that Ghana is currently hosting a significant number of migrants and is exploring sustainable approaches, including the registration of eligible persons as refugees and facilitating voluntary repatriation where appropriate.

The team also expressed appreciation for the work of the Ghana Refugee Board, which was commended for its continued dedication and service in managing refugee affairs in the country.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation to improve refugee protection and support systems in Ghana.
