Mudslide carrying heavy rocks from the Adaklu Mountain struck Adaklu-Helekpe in the Volta Region on Wednesday evening

At least five houses and 9 vehicles were buried after a mudslide carrying heavy rocks from the 600-metre Adaklu Mountain struck Adaklu-Helekpe in the Volta Region on Wednesday evening, May 20, 2026.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 PM during a heavy downpour, throwing the community into fear and anxiety.

Two people, a man and a woman, who were trapped in the debris were rescued by local residents before personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene.

The injured victims were later rushed to hospital.

About 50 goats and other livestock are also reported to have perished in the incident, while displaced residents are currently staying with relatives and sympathisers.

The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joseph Tetteh Freeman, confirmed that no lives were lost.

He subsequently directed residents living close to the affected area to evacuate immediately and stay away from the scene for at least one week.

“This is because we need to bring in geological engineers to assess the situation,” he explained.

According to ACFO Freeman, the mudslide covered several acres of land, prompting authorities to advise residents against visiting their farms until the area is declared safe.

He commended local residents for acting swiftly to rescue the two victims trapped beneath the debris.

“We will continue to visit Adaklu-Helekpe until we are sure the place is safe,” he said.

A team from the National Disaster Management Organisation was also at the scene at the time of the report.

The latest incident is not the first involving the Adaklu Mountain community. In 2017, massive rocks from the mountain reportedly exploded violently, sending debris into the community and forcing residents to flee.
