Vice President visits site of Accra school building collapse, assures support for victims

Ghana’s Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has visited the Accra New Town Experimental School following the collapse of a multi-storey building on the premises, where she received a detailed briefing on rescue and recovery efforts.

The Vice President was accompanied by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, as well as officials from the Ghana Armed Forces, including the 48 Engineer Regiment, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation(NADMO).

Officials confirmed that 23 people were rescued from the rubble, while three fatalities were recorded.

Emergency teams continue to work at the site, with debris clearance operations expected to continue over the coming days.

The Vice President commended the swift and coordinated response of the emergency services, as well as members of the local community, who acted as first responders and played a crucial role in the initial rescue efforts.

On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, she expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and solidarity with those affected.

She also stressed the need to address the root causes of such incidents, highlighting the importance of strict adherence to building regulations and accountability to prevent future occurrences.

Following the site inspection, the Vice President visited injured victims receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital, where she was received by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

At the University of Ghana Medical Centre, she was joined by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, as she interacted with victims and medical staff.

The Vice President assured victims and their families of the government’s full support during the recovery process, describing the incident as a difficult moment that requires both compassion and decisive action.
