The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has joined hundreds of workers across the Volta Region to commemorate the 2026 International Workers' Day celebration held at Jubilee Park in Ho, praising their resilience and contributions to regional development.

The event, organised by Organized Labour in the Volta and Oti Regions under the theme “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,” brought together a cross-section of society, including workers, labour leaders, traditional authorities, and key stakeholders, in a strong display of unity and solidarity.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Gunu expressed deep appreciation to workers across various sectors;  farmers, traders, teachers, health professionals, artisans, and public servants for their continuous role in driving economic growth and development in the region. He stressed the importance of building a skilled, disciplined, and forward-looking workforce capable of adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving livelihoods through strategic policies such as the 24-hour economy initiative, which aims to expand employment opportunities, increase productivity, and support businesses within the region. He further highlighted skills development, especially among the youth, as a critical pillar for achieving sustainable development.

Mr Gunu was joined by the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, who urged workers to remain resilient, innovative, and committed to productivity. He also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate development in both regions.

The Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, Edith Abla Amenuvor Afewu, underscored the need to address concerns related to job security, fair wages, and improved working conditions, while advocating for inclusive growth that benefits all workers.

The celebration featured a colourful march through the principal streets of Ho, accompanied by solidarity songs and a ceremonial presentation of awards to outstanding workers and institutions in recognition of their dedication and service.

The 2026 May Day celebration called for a renewed commitment and collective effort towards building a stronger Volta Region and a more prosperous Ghana, with leaders emphasizing that the future of the region rests on the strength, dedication, and resilience of its workforce.
