Two men have been arrested after an intelligence-led Police operation at the Asawase market in Kumasi uncovered suspected narcotic drugs concealed inside fertilizer sacks.

The operation, carried out on July 21, 2026, followed credible intelligence suggesting that illicit drugs were being transported in fertilizer bags.

Acting on the tip-off, officers from the Manhyia District Police Command, supported by personnel from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Zongo Police Station, moved in and apprehended the suspects.

The suspects have been identified as 37-year old Osman Bassein and 38-year old Mohammed Abdul-Razak.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, a search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses led to the retrieval of 13 fertilizer sacks. 

A closer inspection of the bags revealed second-hand clothing concealing 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Police said all the recovered exhibits were photographed at the scene in line with evidential procedures before being secured for forensic examination.

The two suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators. 

Authorities say they will be processed in accordance with the law once investigations are concluded.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command also expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing timely and credible information that contributed to the operation. 

The Command further urged residents to continue supporting efforts to combat crime by reporting suspicious activities through the police emergency numbers 191 and 112 or the MTN toll-free line 18555.
