Police in the Bono East Region have arrested a 48-year-old tricycle rider after discovering a large quantity of suspected cannabis concealed in bags of charcoal following a road accident in Techiman.

The suspect, identified as Robert Tannor, was apprehended by the Bono East Regional Police Command on Saturday, March 8, 2026, after officers responded to a reported accident involving an unregistered Motor King tricycle, locally known as an aboboyaa.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 2 PM near the Techiman Methodist Park area. Tannor, who works as a rickshaw rider, was transporting 14 bags of charcoal when his tricycle reportedly crashed into a stationary Kia Rhinotruck.

When officers arrived at the scene to assess the accident, they conducted a search of the charcoal bags and made a startling discovery. Hidden inside the sacks were compressed slabs of dried plant material suspected to be cannabis.

Police recovered 397 slabs of the suspected narcotic substance from the scene.

Tannor sustained severe leg injuries in the crash and was immediately transported to the Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment. He is currently receiving care at the facility under police guard while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, authorities say the Kia Rhino truck involved in the collision fled the scene shortly after the crash.

The police are appealing to the public for information that could help identify and locate the driver of the truck to assist with ongoing investigations into the case.

The seizure forms part of broader efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on the transportation and distribution of illegal narcotic substances across the country
