The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will, going forward, select their preferred Senior High Schools only after the release of their results.

The new approach marks a departure from the current system, where candidates choose their Senior High Schools before sitting for the examination.

According to the Minister, the proposed change aims to improve placement outcomes and ensure that students make more informed choices based on their actual performance.

According to him, the policy is expected to enhance transparency in the school placement process while reducing mismatches between students’ academic performance and their selected schools.

It is also intended to give candidates a clearer understanding of their options, allowing them to make realistic and strategic decisions, he said

The sector Minister's announcement  was made at a press conference organised at the Ministry on Wednesday

The Minister went on to say the Ministry has received approval from the Ministry of Finance to recruit 7,000 teachers across the country, prioritising those willing to serve in deprived areas.

The recruitment process, which will be open, transparent, and competitive, is expected to begin on April 10, 2026, with applications accepted from graduates of the 2023-2024-2025 cohort.

Additionally, 1,200 faculty members will be recruited for public universities, including the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, to address staffing gaps.

The government aims to decentralise the Ghana Education Service and improve the delivery of education, with a focus on infrastructure, learning resources, and teacher welfare.

Applications for the teaching positions will be accepted through the GIS application portal from April 10, 2026, with successful candidates expected to be onboarded by July 1, 2026.
